Looking for a LG G5 SD card? Well no need to hit the back button, as this short guide will highlight the best memory card options for the phone, as well as a ton of other detailed information that can assist you with understanding the type of cards that work with the G5 among other things.
The Best LG G5 SD Card
There are tons of memory card options available and I know it can be challenging trying to find the right one for your phone. I have listed the 3 cards you definitely need for your LG G5 and this is based on price, performance and storage capacity.
If money is not an issue and you want to future proof yourself, then the 128GB MicroSDXC card should be at the top of the list. A lot of people don’t consider this as it is double the cost of the 64GB, but it is really a great upgrade for the LG G5. It performs well and is from a well respected brand, so this is one card that you can’t go wrong with.
This is definitely the best option for your phone, as you get the best of both worlds. You get tons of storage and performance, as well as getting it at a really low price. With a card this big, you will not have to worry about space for a LONG time and you won’t be breaking your pocket as they are pretty cheap.
If you are looking to increase the storage capacity of your phone, but not willing to break the bank with a 256GB card, you can always go with this 200GB offering from SanDisk. Yea, it is 56GBs less, but you are also not paying an outrageous price tag. This is a good compromise as it gives a lot more storage space than 128GB, but you won’t be paying an arm and a leg for this premium storage.
You have a big boy phone, so you are going to need a big boy memory card for it and this is where the beastly 256GB MicroSD card comes into play. Let me start out by saying, this card is expensive! However, if you are in a need for data storage, whether to hold your massive mp3 collection, or just to keep up with your video library, then this card is a must have. It pairs perfectly with the LG G5 and just makes this super phone complete.
What Memory Card Does the LG G5 Use?
It can be kinda confusing trying to figure out what type of LG G5 SD card is used in the phone, especially if you are not used to mobile memory cards or the other options. You might see people saying you can use SD cards, MciroSD, MicroSDXC and much more. They probably all mean the same to you, but the G5 can only use Micro memory cards.
The G5 will only use microSD, micro SDHC and microSDXC cards. Contrary to what information is out there, the phone will not be able to take SD cards. SD cards cannot fit in the phone as they are way bigger than the micro cards and you will often find them used in cameras, video cameras, computers and more.
The memory card formats that work with the LG G5 are:
- Micro SD– This memory card format can hold up to 2GB of music, pictures, videos and apps.
- Micro SDHC– This memory card that can hold up to 32GB of music, pictures, videos and apps.
- Micro SDXC– This card can hold up to 2TB of music, pictures, videos and apps.
There is a misconception that I should clear up with the cards mentioned above as people also find themselves confused with MicroSD, MicroSDHC and MicroSDXC. These memory cards all have the same physical dimensions, the only difference between all of them is the storage capacity. The G5 can use all formats with no problems, just that the performance might be a bit slow with some of the older cards.
LG G5 Memory Card Speed
All the cards that I recommended above will have more than enough speed for your phone, however it is still good to know information as it relates to memory card speeds.
All memory cards, whether they are MicroSD or SD all are available in different speeds. The main thing you need to know is that the speed of the card determines how quickly data can be read/written to the card.
Below are the different card speeds available currently.
- Class 2 – Minimum of 2 MB/s performance. (Slowest)
- Class 4 – Minimum of 4 MB/s performance. (Slow)
- Class 6 – Minimum of 6 MB/s performance. (OK)
- Class 10 – Minimum of 10 MB/s performance. (Average)
- UHS-I UI – Minimum of 10 MB/s performance. (Fast)
- UHS-I U3 – Minimum of 30 MB/s performance. (Really Fast)
With your LG G5, you should be able to use a card with any of those speeds, but you should definitely stay away from anything under Class 6, simply because you are going to run into problems. You probably throw your phone across the room when the pictures take a million years to open or you are unable to record video (card is too slow to handle so much data).
If you want to get the full 100 on memory card speeds, you could check out the SD Card Association.
What Size LG G5 SD Card Do I Need?
The cards listed above are perfect options for the phone, however, what about the other sizes of LG G5 SD card? You can use 16GB or lower with no problems, the only thing is that you might end up needing more space in the future or the performance (Speed) could make the phone operate slower.
I will always recommend that you stick with the higher capacity cards for the G5. These cards perform really well and they will be able to deliver more than enough storage space for all your music, pictures, videos, apps and whatever else you are planning on storing on it. Pairing these high capacity cards along with the phone’s internal storage, you will not be hurting for space for a very long time.
How Much Data Can be Stored on the LG G5 Memory Card?
I know sometimes you would want to have an idea as to how much data can actually be stored on these memory cards. Below I crafted a table that will give you a pretty good idea as to how much data these cards can hold.
You should be aware that the numbers used are estimates (based off real world data) and that they memory cards can oftentimes hold more or less, it is dependent on many different factors.
MP3’s | Movies | 720P Video | Images
4GB | 800 | 5 | 1 Hour | 2000 | ||
8GB | 1600 | 10 | 2 Hours | 4000 | ||
16GB | 3200 | 20 | 4 Hours | 8000
32GB | 6400 | 40 | 8 Hours | 22888 |
You should add a paragraph or two about how to actually install them?
Won’t I have to reinstall the OS? What about, my apps?
Do I need to do anything g special or just put it in?
That would have been really helpful
Hi Casey, great suggestion and will update the article to reflect that.
As it relates to putting in the MicroSD, you do not need to install the OS or apps, you just need to push it in and you are good to go.
Without this upgrade…can the lack of make my phone slow ..having problems with sticking
This article was very helpful!!! Thank you for taking the time to list it all out in simple English…for those of us technically challenged ppl😀
